OL'
CHEEKY BASTARDS - San Francisco’s Ol’ Cheeky Bastards were thrilled to be
added to the All-Star Guitar Night bill by Muriel Anderson and TrueFire’s Brad
Wendkos. As the ASGN house band included music legends Stu Hamm on bass and Danny
Gottlieb on drums, the group opted to hit the stage with OCB vocalists Dave
Dalton and Cheryl Munoz (aka “Cheryl Doll”) and guitarist Michael Molenda
(editor in chief of GUITAR PLAYER), and give OCB bassist Patrick Wong and
bagpiper/percussionist Sean Cummings the night off.
Of course, the big event is all about fabulous guitar playing, so Molenda
invited GUITAR PLAYER’s Guitar Superstar 2009 champion Steve Senes and GPGS 2008
finalist Mike Orlando (who was already on the bill as a solo artist representing
GHS/Rocktron) to add some insane guitar pyrotechnics to what OCB called its
“punk-shred” version of the Faces classic, “Stay With Me.” The resulting
performance ignited cheers from the audience, and reviews after the show ranged
from “a train wreck” (the reviewer did NOT enjoy the application of “shredding”
to a Faces tune) to “Wow. Awesome. Relentless. Whew!” Click the video and decide
for yourself!
Ol’ Cheeky Bastards currently have two albums available. Vagrant Records of
Seattle released BAG O’ TRICKS — a raw, stripped-down session with Dalton
playing and singing simultaneously, to which vocal and guitar overdubs were
added -- in 2008. In 2009, Rotten Eggs Records released a split CD featuring OCB
and solo artist Lewis Swan entitled WORKING CLASS HEROES & TRUTHS. This
acoustic-based CD offers six OCB songs, one of which is a cover of The
Sensational Alex Harvey Band’s “Anthem,” complete with bagpipes. Both CDs are
available on CD Baby, iTunes, and other digital-download outlets.
The Bastards play an acoustic/electric blend of Celtic-influenced folk-punk that
evokes that might happen if the Faces teamed up with the Pogues to out-drink and
out-brawl T. Rex and the Sweet. Lead Bastard Dalton -- a seminal SF punk who
founded the Screaming Bloody Marys and Cell Block 5 -- is a charismatic
performer with a sweetly tortured voice who writes melodic songs awash in truth,
pain, and hand-to-hand combat. He is backed by Sean Cummings (whistles,
bagpipes, and kilts), Cheryl Doll (percussion, vocals, and beauty), Patrick Wong
(bass and mischief), and Michael Molenda (lead guitar, vocals, and rampant
buckeroo-ness). For more info on the Bastards, click to
